The household was the centre of life. Here you will find kitchen equipment, pots, lamps, sewing machines, textiles and personal items — many of them labelled with the name of the family that donated them.
The exhibition shows how people cooked, washed laundry on a washboard, heated and sewed without modern appliances. Most of this work fell to women; in official documents of the time it was summed up by a single stamp reading “housewife”. What those two words actually meant, day after day, is exactly what the objects in this room show.
